PHILADELPHIA – In partnership with the Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation, Community College of Philadelphia has announced the creation of the Captain Matt LeTourneau Fire Science Scholarship. The scholarship will support College students pursuing a degree in Fire Science.

An 11-year veteran firefighter in Philadelphia, Captain LeTourneau was beloved and well-respected in his field. He died on Jan. 6, 2018, bravely fighting a house fire in North Philadelphia. He was posthumously made a captain.

“Community College of Philadelphia’s Fire Science program aligns directly with the Social Science department’s emphasis on public service and social justice,” said Dr. Faye Allard, department head of Social Science. “What could be more of an embodiment of public service than those who literally put themselves in harm’s way to help others? In short, the Fire Science program offers rigorous practical and academic training to get students on the pathways of becoming the next generation of public safety stewards in the Philadelphia region, from which we all benefit.”

The new annual scholarship will provide $500 for one student scholarship every year beginning in Jan. 2022. The Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation also has established a $16,000 endowment that will help provide future student scholarships. This scholarship endowment is funded by the generosity of various donors, through events and individual contributions in honor of Captain LeTourneau.

“Since the Foundation’s inception in May 2018 following the tragic loss of Matt, our Board has aimed to fulfill his lifelong passion for firefighting and advancing knowledge,” said Mary T. Kury, the Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation treasurer. “In 2020, we established an endowed scholarship at Matt’s alma mater, Delaware County Community College. Today we are pleased to do this at Community College of Philadelphia as well to continue our mission – to carry on his legacy for future generations through education.”

“Matt provided dedicated service to the residents of Philadelphia after graduating from the Philadelphia Fire Academy (Class 183) in January 2007,” said Kury. “First as a firefighter in Center City (E43), then in West Philadelphia (E57), as well as special detail for Pope Francis’ 2015 visit to Philadelphia (L77), before his promotion to officer in North Philadelphia (E45). As Matt was an eleven-year veteran of the Philadelphia Fire Department, we feel establishing this endowment at Community College of Philadelphia is a natural fit.”

“Having known Matt personally, I am humbled and proud to be able to present this prestigious endowed scholarship to the deserving students of the Fire Science program today and well into the future,” said Carl Randolph, the Fire Science program coordinator at Community College of Philadelphia.

Delaware County Community College Accepts New Student Scholarship Endowment from Foundation Created to Honor the Memory of Late Firefighter and College Alum/Instructor Matthew LeTourneau https://mattl.org/2020/10/09/delaware-county-community-college-accepts-new-student-scholarship-endowment-from-foundation-created-to-honor-the-memory-of-late-firefighter-and-college-alum-instructor-matthew-letourneau/ Fri, 09 Oct 2020 13:22:14 +0000 https://mattl.org/?p=182 (Delaware and Chester Counties, PA)In memory of the late firefighter Matthew LeTourneau, representatives of the Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation announced yesterday the creation of a new endowment to fund scholarships for qualified part-time or full-time students at Delaware County Community College seeking careers as first responders.

The new scholarships, announced at a golf outing at the Springfield Country Club yesterday, will provide $3,000 for student scholarships over three years starting next year. The Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation also has established a $25,000 endowment that will help provide future student scholarships.

“Since the Foundation’s inception in May 2018 following the tragic loss of Matt, our Board has aimed to fulfill his lifelong passion for firefighting and advancing knowledge. We are pleased today to meet our first goal—to carry on his legacy for future generations through education,” said Mary Kury, the treasurer, speaking on behalf of the Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation. “As Matt was not only a graduate of Delaware County Community College in 1995, but also an adjunct instructor at the College, we feel establishing this endowment was a natural fit. The endowment will fund two scholarships annually into perpetuity. These were funded by the generosity of many donors, through events and through individual contributors who wished to join us to help honor Matt.”

The scholarships are for students entering the College’s Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic programs. According to the Captain Matt LeTourneau Memorial Foundation website, www.mattl.org, the foundation’s main purpose is to provide scholarship funding for individuals who either cannot afford education or have a desire to pursue a fire science or emergency response management degree. In addition, the Foundation says, it will provide funding in the form of grants to help offset the costs associated with either becoming a county or state certified fire instructor.

Philadelphia Fire Department Captain Matthew LeTourneau, a 1995 graduate of the College and 11-year veteran firefighter, was a beloved and well-respected emergency medical technician/cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor. He died on January 6, 2018 bravely fighting a house fire in North Philadelphia and was posthumously made a captain. In 2018, the College bestowed its highest alumni honor, the Wong Moss Outstanding Alumni Award, posthumously in recognition of Captain LeTourneau’s selfless service.

Matt LeTourneau Blood Drive May 8th https://mattl.org/2018/05/05/matt-letourneau-blood-drive/ Sat, 05 May 2018 21:31:52 +0000 https://mattl.org/?p=66

Hello Everyone,

As may be aware, on January 6th, my brother Matt lost his life trying to save another from a house fire in North Philadelphia as a member of the Philadelphia Fire Department.  In thinking of ways to honor Matt, one way was proposed….by having a day to donate blood in his name.  This can be our way to give back and try to help save a life.
So, I’m asking for your support to help get the word out.  Please share on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or whatever social media you prefer.
On May 8th, I’m asking you to take a moment out of your day and donate blood in my brother Matt’s name.  The campaign is being supported by the Red Cross in PA/NJ, but if you are not located in the PA/NJ area you can donate anywhere in the world.
Just asking that you post a picture on Twitter or Facebook with the following: #GiveBloodToHonorMatt.
Here are a few sites that have additional information:

If you have any questions, please let me know.  And Thank You for helping to give back in my brother’s name.
Sincerely,
Luke LeTourneau
